Baby cocoon

crochet baby cocoon One more thing to share from the past few weeks–a baby cocoon for a new nephew or niece on the way.

Aren’t these colors fun? The yarn is all Caron Simply Soft. I picked the green (“pistachio”) because I think lots of boy-girl exclusive baby things are too limiting. Girls can wear/use/play with just about any color, but it’s hard to hand down a pink layette later when a girl gets a new brother, you know?  And then I picked the white and gray (“grey heather”) because they look so soft and inviting. And the finished cocoon is sturdy but definitely soft!

I did hesitate on the stripes. Well, not the stripes themselves–I love stripes, so I dug in. But I knew from the get-go that stripes would mean a thousand extra ends to hide when I got done stitching. So the finishing was kind of a drag…but finishing kind of always is a drag, isn’t it? No surprises there.

They were worth it!

The cocoon and hat are made from this pattern from Rachel Choi, with one small modification. My final row made the edge curl a little too much. It just wasn’t neat. I added a turn and a row of hdc in the other direction, and that fixed the curl. The hdcs also made an interesting little extra texture stripe without making the edge lacy.

What’s you favorite pattern to use for a baby shower gift? Crochet, knit, sewing, quilting…tell all!
